Living in Paphos: What You Actually Need to Know

Paphos is Cyprus's most English-friendly district, but that doesn't mean navigating local businesses is straightforward — especially if you're managing a property from abroad or making expensive decisions without a local network to lean on.

The market is small, and word of mouth is everything. With a population of around 80,000 in the wider district, there's no anonymity for bad businesses. A contractor who overcharges a British retiree in Kato Paphos will hear about it in a Facebook group by the weekend. That's useful, but only if you know where to look, and only if you know which voices to trust.

Distance makes everything harder. Most property owners in Paphos don't live there full time. Many visit two or three times a year and spend the rest of the time managing maintenance requests, tenant turnovers, and renovation decisions over WhatsApp. Choosing the wrong furniture supplier or appliance shop from the wrong side of the internet is a costly mistake with no easy remedy.

A Few Things That Catch People Out

The afternoon siesta is real. From mid-June through August, many businesses close between roughly 2pm and 5pm. If you're trying to coordinate a delivery, confirm an order, or reach a shop while managing things remotely, hitting that window can cost you a day. Morning calls and visits get things done faster in summer.

Deposits are standard, but protection isn't always. Furniture and appliance retailers here routinely ask for 30 to 50% upfront. That's normal. What's less normal back home is that consumer protection if something goes wrong can be thin. Reviewing a business before committing to a deposit is worth the five minutes it takes.

Old Town and Kato Paphos aren't the same market. The tourist-facing strip around the harbour has very different pricing and service standards to the shops serving residents in Chloraka, Peyia, or Emba. Listings on this site cover businesses serving the residential and property-owner market, not tourist-facing trade.

English is spoken, but communication still breaks down. Most larger retailers have English-speaking staff. Smaller hardware shops and trades are more variable. Knowing a business's communication norms before you're mid-project is worth knowing in advance.

Why Trust Scores Matter Here

Review platforms weren't designed for a market like Paphos. Google reviews for a local furniture shop might mean 40 reviews over five years, which isn't enough signal on its own. Facebook group recommendations carry real weight but depend on who you know. Reddit threads go stale.

TrustedInCyprus pulls from all three sources, adds an assessment of each business's online presence and responsiveness, and turns it into a single score you can compare across categories. No business pays to change their score. The methodology is published openly so you can judge it yourself.

Covering Paphos first. Limassol and Larnaca to follow.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Common Questions About Paphos

Do most businesses in Paphos speak English?

In the larger furniture showrooms, appliance retailers, and hardware stores, yes — English-speaking staff is the norm rather than the exception. Smaller family-run shops and trades can be more variable. It's worth checking before you commit to a project, particularly if you need to communicate technical specifications or manage things remotely. Our listings flag where communication quality stands out, in either direction.

Is Paphos a year-round place to get things done?

Unlike the more seasonal resort areas in Cyprus, Paphos operates as a functioning residential district throughout the year. The international community is here full time, businesses serve that market, and services don't wind down after the summer. The main practical adjustment is the afternoon siesta common during summer months, when many businesses close between roughly 2pm and 5pm.

How is the Trust Score on TrustedinCyprus calculated?

Every business is scored out of 10 using three independent public signals: Google reviews (volume, rating, and recency), UGC mentions from expat forums, Facebook groups, and Reddit, and an assessment of their online presence and professionalism. The full methodology is published on our scoring page. No business can pay to change their score.

Can a business pay to appear higher in the results?

Businesses can pay for featured placement, which puts them at the top of their category. That placement is clearly labelled. Their Trust Score is calculated independently and cannot be influenced by any commercial relationship with us. A featured business with a low score will still show a low score.

Why focus on Paphos first?

Paphos has the largest concentration of English-speaking residents and property owners in Cyprus, which makes the need for reliable local information most acute here. The same scoring system will roll out to Limassol and Larnaca using the same methodology and the same standards.
